My grandson is a passionate fisher. I guess I got him started on it at a
pretty early age but now at age 12 he has surpassed his grandfather's
enthusiasm and dare I say skill! He found he could fish for bass around his local creeks at Nimbin so his
weekends are often taken up fishing with his good friend and neighbour. I mentioned how I had camped at a place called the Clarence Gorge some
years ago and that it was a special place for the beauty, remoteness and bass
fishing. We had the most wonderful weekend kayaking, catching and releasing quite
a few bass and we camped beside a campfire and took in the majestic scenery of

My family and friends have camped at Sandon River for many years. Sandon River is in the Yuraygir National Park and is a beautiful river
about ten kilometres south of Brooms Head along an often rough, potholed dirt
road. The drive is always interesting through low coastal heath. Sometimes if you don't check the tide chart you might have to boil the
billy and wait for the tide to recede off the road before you can get to the
campground. We used to frequently see the endangered Coastal Emus on this drive
along the road into Brooms Head and out to Sandon. You see them only occasionally now.
Another iconic resident around Sandon and Brooms Head is a solitary old
Brumby affectionately known by the locals as Brumbles. Back in 2012 the last remaining handful of brumbies were taken off the
Park except for Brumbles who must have outwitted them. He is apparently about 19 years old and cuts a fine but lonely figure
amongst the vast low coastal vegetation that is typical here. Sandon River is a favourite place of ours and seeing the brumby and
coastal emus when we visit adds a bit extra to our trips here. Published 23 Dec

Bell's Beach

The sand at Bell's Beach is very coarse compared to other beaches on the
surf coast. R I P Bernard 'Midget' Farrelly, Australia's first world surfing
champion. 170cm tall and just 66kg he won the very first official championship,
in Manly in 1963. 'From 1962 to 1970 he was arguably the best competitive
